Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Ashvin Patel specializes in Spinal Surgery. He attended Tufts University in Massachusetts where he completed his undergraduate and medical education. He received the Reader’s Digest Fellowship and the Tufts University School of Medicine Prize in Family Medicine. Dr. Patel has served on the President’s Council of Tufts University since 2016.
Following his internship in General Surgery and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, Dr. Patel completed a one-year fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the Lakewood Orthopaedic Clinic in Colorado.
Dr. Patel was recognized for his achievement in medicine and the community at his 25th medical school reunion, where he received the 2013 Tufts Medical Alumni Association Dean’s Award. Sarasota Magazine and Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors have also recognized him each year since 2012 for regional expertise in Spinal Surgery.
Dr. Patel has served as Chief of Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Chief Spine Consultant at the Spinal Cord Injury Center at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Sarasota, and Spine Consultant for Children’s Medical Clinic of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He has also served as a Spine Consultant for Sarasota Therapy Center and Bollettieri Sports Medicine Center.
An active member of the Quality Improvement Committee at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Dr. Patel has also been a member of Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Medical Executive Committee in 2000-2001, 2006-2007, and 2015-2016. In addition, in 2000-2001, he served as a Member of the Board of Governors for The Sarasota County Medical Society and he has been a member of the Sarasota County Medical Society Committee on Medical Education. He enjoys teaching and serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Clinical Sciences at Florida State University (FSU) College of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Patel teaches third and fourth year FSU medical students at the Sarasota campus. He frequently mentors high school and college students interested in a career in the health sciences and medical students interested in a career in orthopaedic surgery.
Dr. Patel has lectured frequently on various disorders of the spine at national and international courses for other surgeons and industry personnel. He enjoys attending national meetings on spinal disorders and learning the latest techniques of spinal surgery. He frequently participates in FDA clinical research trials involving new and innovative spinal implants. Dr. Patel’s areas of expertise include disorders of the cervical spine, total disc replacement, and minimally invasive spinal surgery.
Dr. Patel is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, and AO North America. He was accepted as an active member of the highly prestigious Cervical Spine Research Society.
Dr. Patel has published in several orthopaedic journals and textbooks, including Evaluation and Treatment of Fractures of the Spine in Hoppenfeld, S. (Editor): Treatment and Rehabilitation of Fractures: Lippincott-Raven. In his free time, Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and playing sports. He was an avid B level squash player who now plays tennis in the Florida USTA 4.0 Leagues. Dr. Patel also swims regularly and enjoys hiking, biking, and skiing in Summit County, Colorado.
